Getting to Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island lies 15 kilometers off the mainland of South Australia and is easily accessible by sea or air.

Qantas operates flights from Adelaide Airport. The short 30 minute flight lands at Kingscote Airport, 13 kilometers from Kingscote. As Kangaroo Island does not have a public transport system visitors need to hire a car or arrange a tour with one of the many operators on the island.

Sealink operates a ferry service from Cape Jervis on the mainland to Penneshaw. While you can drive yourself, coach connections are available from Adelaide, Cape Jervis, Penneshaw, American River and Kingscote. The ferry trip is a comfortable 40 minutes.

KI Connect operate a passenger ferry service from Cape Jervis, with a range of hire cars available in Penneshaw.

Most tourism attractions o Kangaroo Island are on or within a few kilometres of the sealed roads. A 4WD is not necessary, with care you can enjoy all the island has to offer in a 2WD. If you choose to hire a vehicle, it is important to check the restrictions as some mainland hire companies will not ensure vehicles on the island. KI Connect, Budget and Hertz all have hire cars available on Kangaroo Island. We recommend you book early if you need a car.
